St. Thomas men’s hockey graduate student goaltender Peter Thome signed a professional contract Tuesday with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

Thome transferred to St. Thomas after playing four seasons with the University of North Dakota. In 29 games at St. Thomas, Thome recorded 813 saves. Thome was in goal for all three of the Tommies’ wins in the 2021-22 season.

The Steelheads have 16 games left in the regular season and currently sit third in the ECHL Mountain Division. The ECHL is two leagues below the NHL and gives players the opportunity to develop their game and earn contracts in the AHL, NHL or European leagues.

Thome was a sixth-round draft pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2016 but is unsigned.
