St. Thomas softball falls to St. John Fisher in season-ending defeat

SALEM, Va. — St. John Fisher pitcher Lindsey Thayer retired the final 13 St. Thomas batters and tossed a two-hitter to defeat the 12th-ranked Tommies 2-0 Friday and eliminate them from the College World Series.

Thayer, a sophomore, leads Division III softball in overall strikeouts and strikes per seven innings. Unranked St. John Fisher (39-11) allowed St. Thomas (43-8) only hits by Dana Connelly and Michaela Trainor to begin the second inning, but got three outs to get out of the jam. Thayer struck out seven.

Both the Cardinals and Tommies were scoreless through the first five innings. St. Thomas starting pitcher Katie Jo Delisle threw the first three innings and left six Cardinals stranded on base.

Junior Jessica Eppenberger, in her longest outing of the season, replaced Delisle in the fourth inning and finished the game, but St. John Fisher first baseman Sarah Kubik hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals added another run in the seventh.

Regular pitcher Kierstin Anderson-Glass, who won 30 games this year, did not play.

The Tommies were left with two innings to score, but Thayer and the Cardinals gave St. Thomas no chances to get on base, and ended its season and two-game run in the eight-team tournament.

St. John Fisher will advance to the third round Saturday and play the loser of third-ranked University of Texas-Tyler and fifth-ranked Emory University.
