The St. Thomas softball team tumbled against North Dakota State University this past weekend in their three-game series, getting swept in a three-game series at South Field. The Tommies fell 5-0 and 9-0 on Sunday before losing 6-2 in Monday’s finale.

Starting on Sunday with a doubleheader, the Tommies (15-20, 4-10) fell during the first game of the series. Sophomore pitcher Ella Cook held the offense scoreless as long as she could before the Bison (26-16, 10-5) swept the day.

Throughout the game, Cook allowed eight hits, four walks, and two hit batters and struck out three of NDSU’s batters.

In the day’s second game, senior pitcher Isabelle True allowed six runs on six hits. Junior Grace Bennett relieved her in the fourth inning.

Series finale

Monday’s game was scoreless until the top of the third when NDSU came away with two runs and two hits.

Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Raymond scored on a sacrifice fly from senior right fielder C.J Jacobson in the third, putting the Tommies on the board. A few moments later, first-year outfielder Avery Wukawitz scored on first-year third baseman Abbi Stierlen’s single, bringing the score to 3-2 NDSU.

The score held until the top of the seventh, when first-year shortstop Bella Dean cranked a 3-run home run, her second of the series, that put the Bison up 6-2.

St. Thomas managed to get a runner to second in the bottom of the seventh, but did not score.

The Tommies’ next game will be a doubleheader at Green Bay on Tuesday, April 25 with game times at 3 and 5 p.m.
