Whether it’s 1901 or 2016, the now-annual Tommie-Johnnie football rivalry promises two things: an intense game and an equally intense crowd.

This year marks the 86th time the Tommies and the Johnnies have faced off. Following today’s 33-21 victory, the Tommies are now 5-2 over the past seven years.

“There are so many people who are so passionate about their team,” said Anthony Mahady, a junior at St. Thomas. “It’s really cool to see.”

The Tommies and Johnnies played each other close, with the Tommies finally emerging victorious in arguably the most anticipated MIAC football matchup of the regular season. It’s games like this that keep the fans interested.

“It’s kind of like getting a Division I experience in a Division III atmosphere,” Mahady said.

Whether it be their first or fourth Tommie-Johnnie experience, everyone seems to agree that it’s always enjoyable.

“It’s the ideal college experience,” said sophomore Mary Eckbert. “It’s what a college sports atmosphere should be like.”

With Eckbert adding that this is her second Tommie-Johnnie, she said that with every year the experience becomes more enjoyable “because you know so many more people.”

Haden Hausken, a junior, didn’t let the fact that this was his first game get in the way of his enjoyment.

“This is my first Tommie-Johnnie and it’s awesome,” he said. “I think the red and purple going at it is always a good time, and it’s been great being here.”

The energy of the crowd remained at a constant high. At the final whistle, Tommie fans stormed the field to celebrate with their team.

“The energy is the most crazy thing about (the game),” said Ryan Thompson, a junior attending his third straight Tommie-Johnnie game. “Everyone goes nuts. They dress up in crazy outfits, they break out the cardboard heads.

“Everyone just wants to have a good time, win or lose,” he added.
