The St. Thomas men’s soccer team fell to the top-seeded Gusties 3-1 in the MIAC championship Saturday at Bethany Lutheran College.

The Gusties (17-3-0 overall, 10-1 MIAC) captured its seventh MIAC title in school history.

The Tommies (12-4-4 overall, 9-2 MIAC) struck first, scoring 14 minutes into play by junior forward Jake Makela but couldn’t hold their lead.

After a back and forth battle, the Gusties scored their first goal by Otis Anderson– his first of the season– assisted by Scott Heinen.

The Gusties had 12 corner kicks, giving them an advantage in the Tommies’ box.

The two teams entered halftime tied 1-1.

Gustavus’ second goal came from sophomore forward Cole Schwartz at the 71:29 minute mark. Schwartz leads the MIAC in goals scored with 23 this season.

Tommies couldn’t capitalize on offense in the remaining minutes of the game.

Midfielder Matt Gibbons closed out the game for the Gusties advancing the score 3-1.

After today’s win, Gustavus receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III men’s playoffs. The Tommies await to hear their standing during the selection show Monday, Nov. 11 at 12:30 CT.
