The St. Thomas men’s soccer team ended its long week of games with a 3-1 victory over St. Scholastica on Sunday at South Field.

The Tommies (8-1-1 MIAC, 9-3-3 overall,) extend its win streak to eight games placing them at the top of the MIAC.

This was the final home of the regular season for the men’s soccer team, but more importantly senior day. The team honored its four seniors: Andrew Shirley, Scott Cloe, Troy Louwagie and John Slack.

“It’s pretty much been my whole life for the last four years,” Shirley said. “It’s still going on and hopefully for a little longer through November, but it’s been an incredible four years. I absolutely wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Junior defenseman Halvor Houg scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick ball from Shirley.

The Tommies rode the lead into halftime, but Saints midfielder Finigan Huffington scored an unassisted goal in the 65th minute making the score 1-1.

The tie lasted no longer than a minute when Tommie sophomore Jack Berry nailed the ball into the back of the Saint’s net, giving the Tommies a 2-1 lead.

“Jack won us the game with his midfield coverage, his defensive efforts, his goal,” coach Jon Lowery said. “Jack was the man of the match by far.”

Junior forward Jake Makela capped off the Tommies’ win over the Saints (6-12 overall) with another long, unassisted shot at the end of the second half.

The Tommies hope to continue this stride into the last two regular season games against Macalester and St. Mary’s, as well as deep into the playoffs.

“The amount of potential in this group is kind of endless,” Shirley said. “We are starting to hit our stride, and we’ve been starting to hit our stride at the right time.”

The Tommies play at Macalester (4-2-1 MIAC, 6-4-4 overall) Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

“There’s something special in this group,” Lowery said. “I think they know it, and we’re going to run with it.”
