TommieMedia seeks student opinions on racism at St. Thomas

In the past six months, the St. Thomas community has experienced hate crimes, protests and multiple conversations about racism at our school. Most recently, TommieMedia published photos of blackface from The Aquin newspaper and Aquinas yearbook archives.

TommieMedia has reported on these events to the best of our ability, and we strive hard to represent appropriate perspectives on the stories that we cover. Even so, we recognize that some points of view may be overrepresented while some communities, like students of color, may be underrepresented.

We wish to provide a platform for any St. Thomas student to be heard.

We want to hear your thoughts on racism at St. Thomas.

Please call 612-367-6228 to leave a voicemail with your views about the campus climate and racism. Has St. Thomas made progress in making racism less prevalent on campus? Why or why not? How does it affect you? What needs to change? Who should take action?

TommieMedia staff will not be answering the phone line; your call will go straight to voicemail. The voicemails will be recorded and then edited into a podcast, which will be published with context on TommieMedia.com. Please state your St. Thomas email and spell out your name before you begin speaking. The phone line will close at midnight on March 31.

We will only publish answers from students. Participants are not guaranteed anonymity. Answers may be edited for clarity, length or to eliminate profanity.
