Quarterback John Gould’s electrifying 61-yard touchdown run with two minutes remaining in the first half resulted in the No. 15-ranked St. Thomas football team’s 29-0 halftime lead over Hamline University Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium.

Gould took over for quarterback Alex Fenske with about five minutes to play in the half. Fenske got the Tommies off to a hot start passing the ball, completing his first nine pass attempts to five different receivers, but Gould finished off the half with 112 rushing yards and zero passing yards.

The Tommies opened the scoring on their second drive of the game, a 76-yard drive that Fenske capped off with an 18-yard touchdown pass to running back Nick Waldvogel with 2:32 to play in the first quarter.

The opportunistic St. Thomas defense forced and recovered two Hamline fumbles in the first half, both of which resulted in St. Thomas touchdown drives.

Fenske threw for a second touchdown – a 25-yard pass to tight end Cole Kelly – with 6:59 remaining in the second quarter. Wide receiver Dan Ferrazzo was successful on the 2-point conversion to put the Tommies up 15-0.
