Tommies softball win extra-innings thriller to advance to Super Regionals

Pinch-hitter Sam Burling bunted home Maria O’Leary with the winning run in the 11th inning to lead St. Thomas to a 1-0 victory over Hamline in the MIAC tournament championship game Sunday.

The Tommies (37-5 overall, 19-3 MIAC) and the Pipers (25-16 overall, 16-6 MIAC) were scoreless through seven innings.

The breakthrough for the Tommies came in the bottom of the 11th inning when pinch-hitter Sam Birling bunted the ball and sent runner Maria O’Leary home from third base.

The Tommies had nine hits through seven innings, adding five more in extra-innings.
