Undefeated Tommies take top spot in NCAA tournament

The undefeated St. Thomas women’s basketball team received the top seed Wednesday in the NCAA Division III tournament and will host UW-Superior in the first round.

The Tommies took their sixth-straight MIAC playoff championship last weekend after defeating Gustavus for the second time this year, 66-49. The victory was the team’s 27th of the season.

The unranked UW-Superior Yellow Jackets have an overall record of 23-4 and have not played St. Thomas yet this season. The Yellow Jackets won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

The Tommies will take on the Yellowjackets this Friday at Schoenecker Arena. St. Thomas will also host ninth-ranked Wartburg College and the unranked University of Chicago, which will also compete Friday night for a spot in the second round. Game times will be announced later today.
