University community responds to racial slur

Two events responding to the use of a racial slur last week on campus have been planned for Tuesday and Thursday during convo hour this week.

The Black Empowerment Student Alliance and Asian Students in America Club will host an open dialogue from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday in McNeely Hall. BESA will also host a sit-in at 11:50 a.m. Thursday in the Anderson Student Center.

Both events are in response to a racial slur posted on a first-year student’s dorm room door in Brady Hall.

“We unequivocally condemn this act of hate and call on all members of our St. Thomas community to work together to ensure that everyone understands that this kind of cowardly act has no place at St. Thomas,” President Julie Sullivan wrote in a campus-wide email. “This behavior violates our convictions as a Catholic university and our code of conduct, and it will not be tolerated.”
