USG club funding update

The Nov. 10 and Dec. 1 Undergraduate Student Government general council meetings featured presentations from university officials and 29 club funding requests.

Much of the Nov. 10 meeting focused on reaction to the discovery of a racial slur on a campus sidewalk, which TommieMedia covered more in-depth here.

USG members also approved 20 club funding requests at the meeting. Active Minds received $260, the Association of Latino Professionals for America received $887.25 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers received $3,827.25.

Campus Outreach received $1,748.25, Campus Crusade for Christ received $7,278.25, Catholic Students Incorporated received $819 and Pre-Law Society received $360.

The Muslim Student Association received $1,685.25, Neuroscience Club received $3,900.75 and Tabletop Gaming Club received $1980. Volunteers in Action received $2,404.50 and Special Olympics received $672.

Six organizations were awarded conference and competitions funding. The African Nations Student Association received $1,418.29 to attend a ‘Battle of the African Student Associations’ at Minnesota State University, Mankato. CRU received $1,500 in addition to its club funds to attend a regional winter conference in Minneapolis. Foreign Affairs Club received $2,500 for a Model United Nations competition in Chicago.

The Muslim Student Association, in addition to its general club funds, received $1,800 in conference and competitions funds to attend the Mas Inca conference in Chicago. Silver Wings to received $997.50 to attend Area Conclave in North Dakota, and Students for Human Life received $2,500 to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

Asian Students in America received $2,200, PULSE received $5,400 and the Muslim Student Association received $1,646 to host campus-wide events.

The USG meeting on Dec. 1 featured presentations from Dustin Killpack from the Tommies Together Volunteer Center and Dan Meyer, vice president for enrollment management.

Killpack explained the various initiatives of the newly-created volunteer center, including resources for finding service opportunities and a volunteer corps of 10 first-year students who help at local schools.

Meyer discussed with USG members how to increase campus participation in Salt, a new online resource for students to learn about loans, finances, scholarships and job opportunities.

Chris Meader, USG vice president of financial affairs, presented nine funding requests at the Dec. 1 meeting. All requests were approved.

Chinese Cultural Association received $1,260, Investment Club received $3,255, KUST received $1,627.50, Special Olympics received $300 and Computer Science Club received $350.

Summit Singers received $2,250 for their winter concert, a campus-wide event. Pre-Law Society received $2,089 in conference and competitions funding for a mock trial invitational event in Superior, Wisconsin.

Campus Outreach received $2,500 to attend a New Year’s conference in Milwaukee, and Club Hockey received $2,500 to travel to Florida Gulf Coast University.
