USG considers creating new position

Undergraduate Student Government President Greg Scharine said the council is considering creating a Chief of Staff position at its meeting Sunday evening. If the position is approved, it would be paid through the USG budget, and the student would be hired for next semester’s council. logo_USGupdate

“Essentially, they are here to coordinate our schedules for an event and make sure that everyone on the executive board as well as everyone on USG is visible at different events and kind of use them as a secretary or assistant,” Scharine said.

USG also discussed its club Leadership Dinner that will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, between all the club presidents and the council.

“The club presidents can ask us any questions they have regarding challenges as a club on campus, or questions they have about our initiatives (or) our club budgeting process,” Vice President Mike Orth said.

Orth said the dinner will set the tone for USG’s University Forum where university administrators will answer students’ questions through an open mic format. The forum will be held during convocation hour Thursday, Dec. 1, in the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.

USG approved the Sports Broadcasting Club. Junior Ross Schreck said the club would “cover all St. Thomas sports” and “influence the community as a whole.”

“We call the games play by play. We are right there following live,” Schreck said. “For the St. John’s game this year in football, we actually had 20,000 people watch our broadcast online. It’s pretty cool.”

Orth also said the annual tree lighting ceremony will take place Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 4:30 p.m. in the lower quad.
