USG swears in Spiritual Committee Chair

The Undergraduate Student Government swore in sophomore Megan Fisher as the new Spiritual Committee Chair and approved Liturgical Choir club at its meeting Sunday.

Fischer was sworn in after the committee was in hiatus for a year. Fischer said she is glad USG and spiritual groups on campus are able to connect again.  USGUpdate

“We, as a committee, hope to put on at least one big event each semester, so we’ve had a lot of ideas for that,” Fischer said. “We’re not sure what that’s going to look like yet, but it’s really exciting.”

Senior class president Sara Greethurst gave an update on Senior Week, which will run from April 28 to May 3. Greethurst said the week will start with senior Mass and a Minnesota Twins game open to about 150 seniors, with tickets selling for $5 each. The Senior Class Gift Committee will have events throughout the week and Senior Week will end with the all-night senior party, held on May 3.

Greethurst said the Senior Class Council is still working on planning the activities for Senior Night, which will be held in the Anderson Student Center.

“Last year, they had the entire building open and things scattered throughout which did not work because it’s a very big building,” Greethurst said. “So we’re basically going to just keep everything to the first floor, other than laser tag.”

Seniors Christine Buelt and Ryan Williams spoke to USG about the need for a Liturgical Choir club at St. Thomas, so club members might have the opportunity to perform social and community service acts outside of academic class. USG approved the club.

USG will hand out $15 Tommie Taxi vouchers Monday and Wednesday on the first floor of the ASC.

USG approved the Conference and Competition requests for six clubs: Volleyball Enthusiasts, Chem Club, Communion Liberation University, Campus Crusade for Christ, Bike Enthusiasts at St. Thomas and Silver Wings.

President Mike Orth announced the Pioneer Press and The New York Times have been chosen as the national and local newspapers that St. Thomas students will be able to get free, online access to. Orth said the access would hopefully start next month.
