USG to launch smartphone app, E-board member resigns

Undergraduate Student Government President Jenna Johnson said the St. Thomas smartphone application will be released during the spring semester through a company called ellucianGO.

Johnson said the new app will include an event calendar, grade and map tools, among other features. The plan was finalized last week, and the app will be a free download.

“We’re really excited that this will be ready to go next semester,” Johnson said. “We have a developer in (Information and Resources Technology) that will work on getting everything together with the company, ellucianGO.” 130303_USG

Vice President of Finance Anne George announced her resignation from the position at the end of the semester. Johnson said they will announce the vacancy after Thanksgiving break, and Johnson encouraged any students with an interest in finance to apply for the position.

“I decided to move on because of a career opportunity that opened up,” George said. “We think (January Term) would be the best transition period for this to happen.”

The council elected sophomore Margaret Chelsvig as its interim sustainability chair Sunday evening during the sixth USG meeting of the year.

Johnson said Liz Chambers, the former sustainability chair, decided she had “a full plate at this time.”

Chelsvig said she heard about the open position from an email sent to her from the political science department, and she presented the council with some ideas to enhance sustainability awareness before the vote.

“One idea that I have is to reduce waste in The View. (The Grill in the View) gives out paper trays to put food in, and we can switch those to plates to conserve,” Chelsvig said.

Chelsvig ran against sophomore Michael Greif, who also heard about the opening from the political science department.

Executive Vice President Sean Ness announced a USG member meet-and-greet event over convocation hour Tuesday. The student body is invited to drink hot chocolate and meet USG representative in Campus Way as a part of the Tommie Takeover initiative.
