St. Thomas senior Emmet Herb was awarded the MIAC Athlete of the Week for men’s golf on Sept. 10. This wasn’t his first time receiving it. In fact, it was his fourth.

With a history like Herb’s, the award is well-deserved according to men’s golf coach Scott Proshek.

“He’s so comfortable and relaxed in how he’s playing,” Proshek said. “It doesn’t take him but one round to feel comfortable with a golf course.”

Herb, an accounting major and two-time All-American, has been playing golf since he was two years old; however, it wasn’t his parents that initially got him into golf.

“I actually would just take my sister’s toy brooms and I’d whack a ball around my house, and that’s kinda how I started,” Herb said. “My parents threw me into lessons when I was really young, and I really liked it.”

Herb played golf throughout high school in his hometown of Madison, Wis. and was the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state champion during his senior year of high school in 2016.

“We had a really good team for all four of my years (in high school),” Herb said. “I’m fortunate enough to be able to do it in college.”

Herb led the Tommies to another team trophy at this year’s Pioneer Collegiate tournament in Maple Plain. He recorded an 8-under par score of 208 over 54 holes.

Throughout the tournament, Herb led all 66 Division III golfers and all but one of the 27 Division I golfers competing.

He also placed second out of 90 players in the NCAA Preview Meet in Palm Beach, Fla. on Sept. 14.

Herb ended last season with a 3-over par score of 671, coming in second for the team under former senior Shane Sienko.

Herb hopes to fix the mistakes from last season and will continue doing what worked well.

“Just keep doing the same thing that we are, keep building on some of the things that we’ve had earlier on in the year and try to fix some of our mistakes and go from there,” Herb said.
