MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — First-year forwards Allie Monrean and Luci Bianchi, and senior forward Rachel Werdin’s scoring gave the St. Thomas women’s hockey team a 3-1 win against Concordia-Moorhead Friday at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Monrean’s goal was her fourth this season.

“We started to move the puck, crashing in deep and going to the puck to try to recycle it better,” Monrean said.

The game started off slowly, with no scoring in the first period. It wasn’t until the bottom of the second period when Monrean scored for the Tommies (6-2-3, 5-0 MIAC).

“It was kind of a good play,” Werdin said. “I love when we can see other people score.”

Concordia (4-4, 2-3 MIAC) senior forward Meghan Rethemeier responded in the first half of the third period, which was immediately followed by Werdin’s goal assisted by sophomore forward Chloe McEnelly.

Toward the end of the third period, first-year forward Luci Bianchi scored with an assist from junior forward Alyssa Wallace. This was Bianchi’s first career goal, and it was an important one to her.

“My brother played for Concordia, so it was kind of fun to get back at him,” Bianchi said.

Coach Tom Palkowski said that lots of practice after last weekend’s loss prepared the team for this battle.

“I thought we played well,” Palkowski said. “We had a good week of practice, and I thought it carried over to the game.”

Palkowski noted the team’s strong first-year base and is looking forward to seeing how they do in future seasons.

“I liked this class when they came in,” Palkowski said. “Sometimes it just takes a little time to get your feet wet.”

The Tommies play at 2 p.m. Saturday for a rematch with Concordia-Moorhead at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
