The St. Thomas football team broke through in the second half and beat the Morehead State Eagles 35-28 on Saturday in St. Paul, for the team’s first Pioneer Football League game of the 2023 season.

It was the Tommies’ (2-2, 1-0 PFL) first home game of the season, extending St. Thomas’ home win streak first set on Dec. 3, 2016.

This was the third game in a row where the Tommies were unable to score in the first half. However, the win ended the team’s two-game losing streak after losing to South Dakota and Harvard in nonconference games.

The sophomore hitter duo of Kaitlynn Peterson and Tezra Rudzitis combined for 18 kills but weren’t able to lead St. Thomas to victory as South Dakota State beat the Tommies 3-0 on Thursday at Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies (4-8, 0-1 Summit League) lost to the Jackrabbits (3-10, 1-0) to start Summit League play. St. Thomas fell 25-16 and 25-23 in the first and second sets. Despite taking the final set to 26-24 in a combative comeback attempt, the game ended with no sets won by the team.

The Minnesota Twins clinched the AL Central title Friday night with an 8-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Alex Kirilloff homered and drove in three runs, and Minnesota held on late to win the division crown for the third time in five seasons under manager Rocco Baldelli.
