Junior defensive back Grif Wurtz was named Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the St. Thomas football team’s 34-7 road win at Valparaiso Saturday.

Wurtz scooped up a 79-yard fumble and returned it to the end zone in the first quarter to give the Tommies an early lead and stifle a Beacon scoring opportunity.

It was Wurtz’s first career touchdown. He also had three solo and two assisted tackles against Valparaiso.

The Tommies hope to stay on top of the PFL with a win against Stetson Saturday at noon at O’Shaughnessy Stadium.
