Police in the central California city of Fresno were searching Monday for suspects and trying to determine a motive for the killing of four people at a backyard party and the wounding of six as dozens were watching football on TV.

Fresno Police Lt. Bill Dooley said “unknown suspects” sneaked into the backyard at about 6 p.m. Sunday and fired into the crowd. Fresno Deputy Police Chief Michael Reid told the Fresno Bee that 10 people were shot and that three were found dead in the backyard. A fourth person died at the hospital. Six others are expected to survive and were recovering at a hospital.

The victims were men ranging in age from 25 to 35, Reid said.

Minnesota Twins prospect Ryan Costello was found dead in his hotel room in New Zealand on Monday, days after joining the Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League.

The 23-year-old third baseman died in his sleep, apparently of natural causes, team officials said.

A statement from the team said Costello’s teammates were “naturally devastated” by the news. Concerns were raised when Costello failed to report for practice Monday morning, days ahead of the Tuatara’s opening game of the 2019-20 ABL season. Costello was traded to Minnesota last year as part of a deal that sent Zach Duke to the Seattle Mariners.

St. Thomas Provost Richard Plumb held a budget forum Oct. 29, stressing transparency and assuring students, faculty and staff that the university had a balanced budget last year. Plumb, along with members of the financial staff, presented both last fiscal year’s budget as well as this fiscal year’s projected budget.
