Despite warnings the race would be close, California Governor Gavin Newsom will remain in office. This win is viewed by Democrats as an endorsement of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his party’s liberal values.

​​Republican talk radio host Larry Elder almost certainly would have replaced Newsom had the recall succeeded. Yet with an estimated two-thirds of ballots counted, the “no” response to the question of whether to recall Newsom was ahead by a 30-point margin. While likely to shrink somewhat in the days ahead as votes cast at polling places are counted, Newsom’s lead couldn’t be overcome.

Minnesota House Democrats voted Tuesday to expel representative John Thompson from their caucus following allegations of domestic violence and questions about his residency. The expulsion leaves Thompson without access to legislative staff and resources. house leaders also repeated their calls for Thompson to resign from the legislature.

Six positive covid-19 cases were reported by St. Thomas’ center for well-being during the first week of classes. As of Monday, 87% of students and employees are vaccinated. According to the COVID-19 dashboard, the cases are within a manageable range and there is no evidence of transmission inside the classroom.
