St. Thomas dining locations Scooter’s, Beaker’s Coffee Shop and Stacks Café are closing for the remainder of the semester after Friday, a Dining Services message posted on OneStThomas said.

The three locations are closing due to low revenue, the venues’ employees said.

“The start of the fall semester at the University of St. Thomas has been an unconventional one,” the OneStThomas message said. “The Dining Services department continues to be nimble and flexible as business needs for dining on campus change.”

Among other changes, Corner Market, the new convenience store in Tommie North residence hall, will shorten its hours, opening at 2 p.m. instead of 11 a.m. The store will still close at 11 p.m.

T’s will also now be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Employees at the two coffee shops said they were not given any notice of the closure and were only told Friday morning of the closure by a text message.

“I was sitting in my Zoom class and I got a text that was like, ‘Hey, we’re closing,’ and I was shocked,” Lauren Degn, senior and Stacks employee, said. “There was no information, it was just like, ‘You can work at The View if you want.’”

Beakers and Stacks employees said they were offered shifts at The View, the dining hall in Anderson Student Center, and Northsider, the new dining hall in Tommie North residence hall.

“The View is not my vibe,” Degn said. “I don’t want to work there.”

Senior Beaker’s employee Alyssa Brix was told that student employees will have to figure out a new plan, even though other campus jobs were offered.

“It was shocking, yet a little bit expected just of how little revenue has been coming in, but still unfortunate just because it is only the second week of school,” Brix said.

Dining Services and Auxiliary Services were not available Friday to comment on the move.
